Journey to Emmaus with the Risen Christ

Why did the two disciples ask Jesus to stay?

I listened to two sermons that expounded on this journey to Emmaus. Both of the preachers concluded that the act of Jesus walking “as if he were going farther” was because Jesus didn’t force the disciples to know that He is Jesus who has raised up from the dead.

“Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” (v. 32)

I think the main focus comes to play on the reason why the disciples asked Jesus to stay. In other words, Jesus raised the authority of scripture to a level where it was not only a relevant thing, but also it was the real thing.

Jesus posed his main idea with a question “Was it not necessary that Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” It was a way for the disciples to think and digest slowly what Jesus was going to explain from the Scriptures about himself.
